## What is a Thread?

Threads are the core component of communication in Glue. Threads contain multiple messages on a topic between any combination of people or groups of people.

Threads provide a structured, yet flexible way to keep conversations on track and bring them to a resolution.

**Named, standalone conversations**

Threads are not locked into a specific group (or channel like in other chat apps), but are their own separate unit of conversation. Each thread has a name, making it easy to find and reference.

**Multi-addressable**

You can include multiple users and groups in a single thread, and add new participants over time. This reduces noise because you do not have to join or create a group just to send one message.

**Choose what's in your inbox**

You can choose to add and remove threads from your inbox to control what notifies you. Your [important threads](https://docs.glue.ai/inbox/inbox#what-makes-a-thread-important) always show up in your inbox.

**Automatic app events**

When you share a link to a supported app — like a [Linear](https://docs.glue.ai/integrations/linear) issue or a [GitHub](https://docs.glue.ai/integrations/github) pull request — the thread automatically subscribes to updates. Status changes are posted as system messages, keeping everyone in the thread informed without any extra setup.

**Organized and results oriented**

Topic-focused conversations keep people focused and bring the conversation to a resolution faster. And when it's resolved, you can archive it!

**Flexible for when the conversation evolves**
